For a spectrum of Nepali people and the Himalaya, the Helambu trek is unrivalled. A short distance north-east of Kathmandu, the trek begins at Panchkel and as the journey progresses we visit the village homes of Brahmin, Newar, Tamang and Sherpa peoples. The Sherpas are Buddhist and it is fascinating to begin to understand the importance of this religion to the life of Nepal. Buddhist influence on its people is deep and involved in every aspect of their life. The diversity of the people we meet is matched by the mountain ranges that rise above us. From low altitudes we have excellent views of mountains that include Langtang, the Annapurnas, Manaslu and even Everest on a clear day. This is a pleasant and exciting journey, a time to relax and become immersed in the beauty of the Himalaya.
