Kanchenjunga Expedition
» 31 Days Round Trip, 25 Days Trekking. Max Altitude: 5000m

In a remote region of Eastern Nepal, close to Sikkim, this long trek takes us through areas only recently re-opened to trekking groups. The trek starts from the sub-tropical lowlands of Eastern Nepal, ending with its high point at the base camp of the world's third tallest peak, the massive Kanchenjunga.

After flying to Biratnagar and driving to Basantapur we start walking at low altitude through the rice fields and villages of the Tarai, Newar, Limbu and Chetri people. As we gradually climb away from the lowlands through forests and into the mountains, the view of four of the world's highest mountains, Everest (8,848m), Makalu (8,477m), Lhotse (8,503m) and Kanchenjunga (8,588m), become increasingly spectacular.

The higher altitudes are also home to the Buddhist Sherpa people whose lifestyle and cultures can be contrasted with that of the Hindu lowlanders. Yalung glacier and Pang Pema base camp are located in barren but beautiful glacial moraine and craggy rocks, with the overpowering bulk of Kanchenjunga utterly dominating.

The return continues on new trails through more spectacular mountain scenery as we gradually descend down through the Tamur river valley. We fly out from Biratnagar to Kathmandu.
